As part of today’s Nintendo Direct mini-presentation, the Japanese company unveiled a new Mario Tennis game for Switch. Called Mario Tennis Aces, the title will be the first Mario sports game for Switch since the console launched last year, and it will arrive in Spring 2018.
Interestingly, Aces will contain a new story mode. This makes it the first Mario Tennis game to include a campaign since 2005’s Mario Tennis: Power Tour (known as Mario Power Tennis in Europe and Australia). Few other details have been revealed so far, although we do know the game is made by longtime Mario sports developer Camelot. You can watch today’s presentation in full here.
The most recent Mario sports game was Mario Sports Superstars, which launched in 2017 on 3DS. The last standalone Mario Tennis game, meanwhile, was released for Wii U in 2015. We gave it a 6/10 in our review of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. “Ultra Smash actually just enough to get by,” wrote reviewer Scott Butterworth. âAt times it shines and at others it frustrates, but most of the time it just stops. Without substantial content to increase longevity, you risk coming back to Mario Kart sooner rather than later, but if you play online – or better yet, with your friends at home – you will likely overcome the frustrations of the game and get a good few hours of enjoyment from its fast paced, power-up action. “
