As India’s hopes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics came to an end with regards to tennis, new possibilities arose as Sumit Nagal and Sania Mirza found their names in the entry list for the mixed doubles events.
However, that does not mean that they will participate in the event. The draw is expected to be announced on Tuesday.
Indian tennis so far:
On Monday, men’s singles player Sumit Nagal was blown away by world number two Daniil Medvedev in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1.
Nagal entered the second round after winning his first round match against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin. It was India’s first Olympic men’s singles victory in 25 years.
Nagal’s exit came after Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina’s doubles pair were knocked out in the first round of the women’s doubles. They were beaten on Sunday by Ukrainian twins Nadiia and Liudmyla Kichenok.
Sania and Ankita won the first set and led 5-2 in the second set and yet lost the match 6-0, 6-7, (8-10).
Tennis at the Olympic Games:
Elsewhere, world No.1 and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty lost to Spain’s Sara Sorribes-Tormo, 4-6, 3-6, while home favorites Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori advanced.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Alexander Zverev and Petra Kvitova all made successful debuts in their singles campaigns.
