Tennis Bounceathon

Each year we hold a special Christmas Celebration at Hampton Court Palace to raise money for our 'Kids on Court' Campaign. The 2002 event, held on the 18th of December, was our third such evening and an important part of fundraising programme for the year.

Guests at our Christmas Celebration are treated to an evening of fine food, music and entertainment in the magnificent setting of King Henry VIII's palace, a perfect location particularly as Henry himself was a keen real tennis player and built a court there.

Hampton Court is spectatcular at night and our guests entered the palace to the tune of bagpipes along an avenue of flaming torches. Our aim is to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional Tudor Christmas and this year, we changed the proceedings slightly to allow our guests to experience some other areas of the Palace.

Lute Players in the Tudor Kitchens The evening began with a drinks reception in the Tudor Kitchens, (kindly sponsored by Adland PG Printing) parts of which date from 1514. A roaring log fire had been lit in the main kitchen and our guests gathered around the fire with glasses of mulled wine.

Our evening has become popular and a regular fixture for many of our corporate and celebrity sponsors who kindly support our work  They contribute to our cause by attending the event so we're always very grateful for their support. It's also great to see so many familiar faces brought together for such a special evening.

Ainsley however, did admit to forgetting what he had worn last year and came wearing the same outfit. Not too serious a fashion crime, though it did mean that he lost out in the most eye-catching waistcoat competition!

In a change of format to our previous evenings, this years event included a very special pre-dinner service held in the Chapel Royal.

The Chapel Royal is part of the ecclesiastical household of her Majesty The Queen and has been in continuous use for over 450 years. It is a stunning building with a magnificent vaulted ceiling , hand carved and painted with gilded pendants and golden stars. Services in the Chapel are normally restricted to the Royal Family, but for our evening we were allowed to hold a service which included readings from Cherie Blair, Derek Jacobi and Hannah Gordon, and carols led by Sir Cliff.

The Great Hall is arguably King Henry VIII's most impressive legacy at Hampton Court. The hammer-beam roof spans the huge space with cantilevered beams and elaborately carved trusses and is decorated with pendants, royal arms and a fascinating series of carved and painted heads.

To re-create the mood and atmosphere of a Tudor Christmas, the Palace was lavishly decorated with some stunning Christmas trees, floral displays and table decorations.

Our evening in the Great Hall is about music and entertainment and this year we were joined by some world class musicians and performers, who entertained our guests throughout the evening.

Gordon Giltrap Elaine Paige Sir Cliff duets with Elaine Paige During dinner world accalaimed guitarist Gordon Giltrap played a selection of classical guitar music. We were also delighted to be joined by singer and star of the stage Elaine Paige, who sung solo and joined Cliff in a duet.

There was also a performance from the Clarinet player Julian Bliss. A favourite of the Royal Family, Julian has performed several times at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Covent Garden Opera House, and was among the distinguished artists invited to perform at the Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations at Buckingham Palace on June 1st 2002.

Sir Cliff Richard One of the main reasons for our event at Hampton Court is to raise money for our 'Kids on Court' Campaign and during the evening Sir Cliff took to the stage to talk about the work of the Tennis Foundation and the need to continue our work to ensure the health of future generations. Each year we hold a raffle and an exclusive auction with lots kindly donated by our various sponsors, which raises money for our Campaign.

This year's auction, led once again by Duncan McEuen from Christie's, featured lots which included a hat worn and signed by Sir Elton John and a luxury safari break in South Africa donated by Richard Branson and Virgin Holidays.

The Band of the Scots Guards The Band of the Scots Guards

The evening was rounded off in spectacular style with the entrance of the Band of the Scots Guards who marched into the Great Hall and performed a number of favourites, including 'Amazing Grace'.

The musical extravaganza culminated in a final 'singalong' with Mike Read, Ainsley Harriott, Gloria Hunniford, Elaine Paige and Sir Cliff, all taking to the stage to sing a medley of Christmas hits. It was a fun and festive end to a very successful evening, and we would like to reiterate our heartfelt thanks to all those who attended the event and gave us their support.
