kidzone - ATP Smash Tennis

ATP SMASH Tennis is a world-wide programme designed to introduce children to tennis in a fun and exciting way. Each event takes the form of a two day street festival, located off site in major tournament cities, the weekend preceeding a tennis tournament. If you're looking for a fun introduction to the sport this is an excellent place to start.

ATP SMASH Tennis works under the supervision of coaches from the tennis federations, leagues and clubs and is a brand new approach to the sport. In many cases SMASH Tennis enables children to try tennis for the first time, introducing new training methods in a lively and fun environment. The street fair atmostphere combines tennis competitions, interactive games and skill contests, and with the attendance of ATP champions they are a dream day out for any tennis fan. When it visits a tournament city, the Smash Tennis event sets up a huge festival area which includes:

  • A central tennis court with public stands and up to seven mini courts
  • Welcome tents for ATP and it's Smash tennis partners
  • Inter-active games: the super Smash scoreboard and four massive inflatables designed by Cartoon Network and Warner Bros.
  • PA and live music
  • Cartoon Network mascots: Scooby Doo, The Flinstones and Tom and Jerry, who wander around the festival all day entertaining the public

Background to the ATP Kids Fund

How did SMASH Tennis come about? In 1995 the ATP Tour players decided that they had to committ resources to increasing player / fan interaction and to attracting more kids to tennis. This resulted in the 'Kids Fund' Programme that includes SMASH Tennis, and also FanFest and Kids Days. In addition to partly funding the programme, the players donate their time by participating in various events such as tennis clinics, autograph and photo sessions, kids press conferences and media promotion.
