Sue Mappin

Sue Mappin has been involved in tennis since the age of six. Her passion and love for the game, together with her outgoing determined personality and huge energy levels have made her one of the game's leading figures, both in the UK and Internationally.

Sue has played at the top level of the International game, competing in all Grand Slam events and has represented her country on numerous occasions. On completion of her playing career in 1978, Sue was asked by the Lawn Tennis Association to become the first National Women's Team Manager, having sole responsibility at all levels of the women's game in the UK. In this position Sue instigated major development programmes, some of which have been subsequently utilised by the United States Tennis Association and led the British team to many successes during the 1980s. Sue was the first ever executive woman to be invited to serve on the Management Committee of the Lawn Tennis Association.

In 1991 The Lawn Tennis Association and the International Tennis Federation appointed Sue as Tournament Director of the Federation Cup. (The women's equivalent of the Davis Cup). This quickly became the biggest ever staged worldwide (over 56 nations) and the most successful in the event's history, attracting an audience of over 80,000. This event had a major impact on the way tournaments have subsequently been staged in the UK, emphasising the need to make tennis accessible to a wider audience.

Sue eventually established her own tennis consultancy, SMC and in 1991 was approached by the Cliff Richard Organisation to establish and administer a new Tennis Charity. The Cliff Richard Tennis Development Trust was born. Since its establishment the charity has poured millions of pounds back into the grass-roots of the game.
