Yannick Noah, because he was a great personality who people wanted to see.

When did you first become interested / show an interest in tennis?
I was five years old when Yannick Noah won Roland Garros and I have wanted to be like him ever since.

Most thrilling moment in sports
When the French won the World Cup in soccer.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome in tennis?
Moving from Marseille to Paris was very difficult because I do not like the life in Paris. But having my wife with me helped me a lot.

What was your most important victory?
The match against Carlos Moya where I saved match point and I won 7-6 in the third. This was a key match for me because Moya was No.1 in world the previous week. I started thinking I can beat other Top 10 players.

Who do you find the most difficult player to play?
Many guys. I played Sampras at Wimbledon and it was terrifying because of how great he is. And I also played Agassi at the US Open.

What special steps do you take to mentally prepare for a big match?
I stay alone maybe 10 mins. before the match to concentrate on the game and focus on my strategy, then warm up.

How do you cope with defeat?
You just learn from it. I'm okay with defeat. I just think about how to improve my game for the next time.

What (thus far) has been the defining point in your career?
The Davis Cup Final. I have never played in front of 10,000 people before. You cannot find that type of atmosphere anywhere else.

What other sports are you interested in / good at?
I love soccer. My favorite soccer team is Marseille, France. I used to play soccer but now only play with friends for fun.

Do you have any special training techniques?
Sometimes I go to the mountains (where my parents live) and I train there for a week. When I am training I don't play tennis, I concentrate on my physical fitness and then we practice later.

Why do you love tennis?
It is fun. I love the game. I don't like to play team sports; I like individual games.

Band: I like the band 'Counting Crows' and a couple of French singers.

CD: Jen Jaques Goldman

Movie (current): I like all James Bond films and Inspector Gadget.

Book: I like Agatha Christie books.

Video Game:
I used to play on the PlayStation but not anymore. I just bought a computer, so now I am on that.

What is your favorite food and restaurant?
I like Pizza made with cheese from the South of France. 'La Grotte', Marseille.

Do you have a special diet?
I don't like eggs, peanuts or vegetables.

Do you eat a particular meal before matches?
Pasta, salad.

Cars (old & new):
I like Porsche. I have a Jeep Cherokee in the US Football (soccer) Club: Marseille.

Outside Interests

Charity
I was involved with the French charity 'Teleton', which cares for sick children. I donated a tennis racquet to raise money for the children. We did that just before the Davis Cup.

Fashion (special designers/types of clothing)?
I am always in shorts. But I like Hugo Boss.

Do you have any pets?
I had a dog when I was younger, but not anymore.

Hobbies?
I don't like golf. I like to snowboard. I like shopping, listening to CDs, and buying clothes.

I bought a computer three weeks ago.

Family Background & Personal

How many brothers / sisters?
I do not have any.

If you weren't a tennis player, what would you be?
When I was younger, I was thinking of being a tennis player or maybe a soccer player. Maybe I would work in a bank because now I'm interested in financial affairs. I think it would be interesting for me to see how it works. I have people who take care of my money for me.

How do you deal with popularity?
I'm really only recognized on tennis courts. When I'm walking down the street, only a few people recognize me, unlike Cedric Pioline. Agassi or Sampras couldn't even go shopping, but it's okay for me.

Apart from the tennis, what do you like most about being a tennis player?
I like to visit different places.

What do you like least about being a tennis player?
Traveling. It is difficult when you have a family.

What do you plan to do after tennis?
Maybe take one year off. I don't know. I am at the beginning of my career, so I don't think about it at all.

Little known fact
Nobody knew I was married. I don't like to speak about my private life. I am very reserved.
